The Regiment was authorized on July 16, 1776 in the Continental Army as Capt. John Doyle's Independent Rifle Company. Organized on September 5, 1776 at Lancaster with recruits from central Pennsylvania and assigned to the Main Continental Army. Disbanded on July 1, 1778 at White Plains, New York.
