The Regiment was authorized on April 8, 1777 in the Pennsylvania State Troops as Capt. John Pugh's Independent Company to guard Powder Mill at French Creek. Organized in May 1777 at Philadelphia. Consolidated on June 17, 1778 with the Pennsylvania State Regiment of Foot.
